On This Day
01 April 1891
John Wodehouse, 1st Earl of Kimberley agrees to lead the Liberal peers in the House of Lords
Kimberley’s elevation came in the wake of the death of Earl Granville, one of Gladstone’s closest colleagues who had led the Liberals in the Lords for thirty years. Kimberley held the post until 1894 when he made way for Lord Rosebery. Following Rosebery’s resignation, Kimberley returned to lead the Liberals in the Lords until his death in 1902.
