Polling day in the 1922 general election

The election was precipitated by the Conservatives pulling out of Lloyd George’s coalition government. The Liberal Party was still divided during the election, H.H. Asquith leading the Liberals and Lloyd George leading the former Liberal members of the coalition standing as the National Liberal Party. The results did not make pleasant reading for the party. The Liberals winning 62 seats and the National Liberals 53. More ominous for Liberals was the fact that, for the first time, the Labour Party overtook the combined strength of the Liberals. Many former Coalition Liberals were defeated, including Hamar Greenwood and Winston Churchill.
