Herbert Fisher gains Sheffield Hallam for the Liberals

Coalition Liberal candidate Herbert Fisher gains the Conservative seat of Sheffield Hallam in a by-election. Fisher was unopposed. New coalition Prime Minister David Lloyd George wanted Fisher, a noted historian and expert on education, as his Education Secretary. The Tories agreed to vacate the seat with the sitting MP being given a peerage to make way for Fisher to enter the House of Commons and the Cabinet. Fisher served in the cabinet until Lloyd George resigned in October 1922 and remained an MP until 1926.
