The Whig MP Sir Rufane Shaw Donkin (1773-1841), a former British army officer in the Napoleonic Wars, is returned unopposed as MP for Berwick-Upon-Tweed, the seat he has represented since 1832, in a by-election caused by his appointment as Surveyor-General of Ordnance. He was later MP for Sandwich in Kent.
