Birth of Leifchild Jones, 1st Baron Rhayader, temperance campaigner and Liberal MP

In a long political career, Leif Jones served as Liberal MP for Appleby 1905-10, Rushcliffe 1910-18 and Camborne 1923-4, 1929-31. Jones never held government office and is probably best known as a leader of the Temperance Movement and was a long time president of the United Kingdom Alliance, the leading prohibitionist organisation. His campaigning for temperance causes earned him the nickname “Tea-leaf Jones”. Jones died in London in 1939 aged 77. His brother Sir David Brynmor Jones was also a Liberal MP.
