On This Day
01 January 1945
David Lloyd George becomes Earl Lloyd-George of Dwyfor in the New Year’s Honours List
By this time Lloyd George, who had been a member of the House of Commons since 1890, was approaching 82 years of age, declining in health and powers. Changes to his Caernarfon Boroughs constituency meant it was in danger of going Conservative at the next election, as indeed it did. This, together with a desire to please his second wife Frances Stevenson by making her a Countess, persuaded Lloyd George to accept the peerage. Lloyd George never took his seat in the Lords. By February his declining health made it impossible for him to travel and he died less than three months after the announcement, on 26th March 1945.
