Death of Francis Henry Fitzhardinge Berkeley Liberal MP for Bristol 1837-1870

Berkeley was a frequent speaker in the Commons best known for his championing of the introduction of the secret ballot for parliamentary elections. He never lived to see it introduced however as the Ballot Act of 1872 came two years after his death. Among his other causes were the abolition of corporal punishment in the army, support for the Maynooth Grant and plans for a national system of education.
