On This Day
13 June 1966
Death of Henry Hogbin, Liberal MP for Battersea North from 1923-24
Between 1922 and 1924 Hogbin fought three elections under a variety of labels, his main opponent being the Communist candidate Shapurji Saklatvala. Hogbin stood against Saklatvala in 1922 as a Lloyd George National Liberal. Saklatvala had the support of Labour and won, becoming only the third black person to win a seat in Parliament. In 1923 Hogbin won the seat by 186 votes or 0.8% of the poll. In 1924, standing as a Constitutionalist, Hogbin lost to Saklatvala by 542. Later, Hogbin abandoned the Liberal Party for the Tories and stood as Conservative candidate in the Stourbridge by-election of 1927 but lost the seat to Labour.
