Thomas Milner Gibson, first President of the Board of Trade, is returned for Manchester ‘by a show of hands in St Ann’s Square as no other candidate appeared’. He won the seat in 1841 and was to remain as the MP until 1857, when he was defeated. He was re-elected to Parliament shortly afterwards for Ashton-under-Lyne and remained in Parliament until 1868. He served as President of the Board of Trade from 1859 until 1866. He died in March 1884 on board his yacht.
