Lord Palmerston’s government establishes the Post Office Savings Bank

The Post Office Savings Bank is established by Lord Palmerston’s Liberal government to provide the working class with a safe means of savings. Its acceptance and success was one of the indicators which led to a widening of the franchise in the Second Reform Act.
