Liberal Richard John Russell gains Eddisbury from the Conservatives

The election was triggered by the death of the sitting Conservative MP Harry Barnston. Russell had fought Eddisbury at the two previous elections and had been nursing the constituency. His campaign was helped by the decision of the Labour Party, never strong in the constituency, not to field a candidate. The Liberals turned a Conservative majority of 1,689 into a Liberal one of 1,292. Russell held the seat at the 1929 general election and then fought in 1931 and 1935 as a Liberal National. He died in 1943 and the seat was won by the Common Wealth Party.
