James Blindell wins the Holland-with-Boston by-election for the Liberals

Blindell cameĀ from third place to turn a Conservative majority of 4,770 into a Liberal one of 3,706. A contemporary account recorded the effect of the news at Liberal Party HQ, ‘The corridors were filled with hysterically happy typists, rushing hither and thither to bring the news to other departments…And upstairs, in his oak-panelled room on the sixth floor, Lloyd George and the Chief Whip, Sir Robert Hutchinson…took hands and performed together a kind of ‘here-we-go-round-the-mulberry-bush’ dance from pure joy.’ Blindell held the seat as a Liberal and later as a Liberal National until his death in 1937.
