On This Day
22 November 1956
Death of Rhys Hopkin Morris, Liberal MP for Cardiganshire 1923-32 and Carmarthen 1945-56
Morris fought Cardiganshire in 1922 as a supporter of Asquith, narrowly losing to the Lloyd George Liberal Ernest Evans. The following year with Liberal reunion achieved and Evans adopted as the official candidate, Morris stood as an Independent Liberal and won the seat. He resigned from parliament on his appointment as a Metropolitan Police Magistrate but returned to the House of Commons in 1945 gaining one of the few seats Labour lost in their landslide election and holding the seat until his death.
