John Morley is appointed Chief Secretary for Ireland in Gladstone’s last administration

This was the second time Morley has held this post, having briefly served in 1886 before the fall of Gladstone’s third ministry over Irish Home Rule. Morley was almost as famous as a man of letters as a politician. He wrote monographs on Voltaire, Rousseau, Edmund Burke and Robert Walpole as well as a three-volume biography of his hero, William Ewart Gladstone.
