Birth of Sir Robert Aske, Liberal and Liberal National MP for Newcastle upon Tyne East
Aske unsuccessfully contested Hull Central on three occasions, coming within 20 votes of gaining the seat from the Unionists at the January 1910 general election. However he had to wait until 1923 before gaining Newcastle upon Tyne East from Labour at the general election of that year. He lost the seat the following year but regained the seat at the 1929 election and held it until he retired in 1945. Aske was one of the original signatories to the declaration of Simonite Liberal Nationals of 5 October 1931 supporting the National Government and remained a Liberal National for the rest of his time in parliament. Robert Aske died in 1954 aged 81.
