On This Day
03 February 1941
Death of Clifford Cory, Liberal MP for St. Ives 1906-22 and 1923-24
Cory was a Welsh colliery owner and Glamorgan Councillor. After fighting several constituencies in Wales and South East England, he gained St. Ives from the Liberal Unionists. Cory was a fierce opponent of Liberal policy towards Ireland, particularly Home Rule and in 1912 was the only Liberal MP to vote against the first reading of the Home Rule Bill, although he never contemplated joining the Liberal Unionists. Cory was a supporter of the wartime coalition and held his seat as a Coalition Liberal in 1918 before losing to the Tories in 1922. He recaptured St. Ives briefly the following year after which he never returned to parliament and concentrated on his business interests.
