The Liberal Party holds the Durham North West by-election

The election was caused by the resignation on appointment as a Judge of the sitting MP L A Atherley-Jones. The winner, against a Unionist and for the first time Labour opposition there, was Aneurin Williams, former MP for Plymouth. Williams was a radical who often spoke out on foreign policy issues and has been included in the group of politicians dubbed “The Troublemakers” by A J P Taylor.
