Polling day in the 1966 general election

Although the Liberal share of the poll declined from 1964, its number of MPs increased from nine to 12. The gains on the night included three MPs who were to play an important role in the party – Dr Michael Winstanley in Cheadle, Richard Wainwright in Colne Valley and John Pardoe in North Cornwall. There was one big shock for the party in the loss of Cardiganshire to Labour, where the sitting Liberal MP, Roderic Bowen, had held the seat since 1945.
