Henry Labouchere attemps to end hereditary peerages

A motion from Henry Labouchere the radical Liberal MP for Northampton to ‘liberalise’ the House of Lords by removing the principle of hereditary peerages is defeated in the House of Commons by 223 votes to 162. Throughout the 1880s, Labouchere made a number of attempts to reform, or abolish the House of Lords.
