Edinburgh endorses the Liberals

A well-attended open-air meeting for the working classes of Edinburgh was held on Calton Hill and passed the following resolution that ‘this meeting believing that the prosperity and advancement of the nation can only be effected by having a Liberal government in power resolve that they will support only those candidates for the representation of the city who are in favour of the broad principles represented by Mssrs. Gladstone and Bright.’ At the 1868 general election the two Liberals, Duncan McLaren and John Miller were returned unopposed.
