A silk manufacturer by trade, he served as Whig (later Liberal) MP for Macclesfield from its creation as a Parliamentary constituency following the Great Reform Act in 1832 until 1868. He was succeeded as Liberal MP for the seat by his son William Coare Brocklehurst who held the seat until 1886.
