David Davies was the grandson of the great industrialist and also Liberal MP, David Davis Llandinam. A keen internationalist, Davies was an active supporter of the League of Nations and in 1932 founded the New Commonwealth Society with the aim of establishing a military force to support the League and to promote disarmament and world peace. In 1919 he endowed a chair in international politics in honour of US President Woodrow Wilson at the University College of Wales. When Davies retired from the House of Commons. he was succeeded by Clement Davies who led the party from 1945-56.
