The Anti-Corn Law League is wound up

At a meeting of the League Council in Manchester, the Anti-Corn Law League is dissolved in the wake of the repeal of the Corn Laws by Sir Robert Peel’s Conservative government. Presentations were made – every member of the Council received a silver tea and coffee service. Richard Cobden received £75,000 in recognition of the financial burden he had undertaken on behalf of the League. John Bright received £5,000 for the purchase of a library and an oak bookcase engraved with scenes from the life of the League.
