William Gladstone is threatened with defenestration

Young members of the Carlton Club threatened to throw Gladstone out of the club’s first-floor window, in the direction of the Reform Club across the road, which they claim is where he belongs after his destruction of Disraeli’s Budget. The Carlton Club, which was closely linked to Conservative politics, had been hosting a dinner celebrating the acquittal of the Club’s agent on bribery charges at the recent general election. Gladstone had just accepted office in the recently-formed coalition led by the Earl of Aberdeen.
