Lord Melbourne resigns as leader of the Whigs

William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne, Home Secretary under Earl Grey and himself twice Prime Minister, suffers a stroke ending his leadership of the Whigs. Melbourne was Prime Minister when the 18 year old Victoria came to the throne. He acted as her political mentor and the two became friends.
