Birth of the Marquess of Ripon, a fixed presence in Liberal cabinets for over 40 years

George Robinson, 1st Marquess Ripon had a long and varied career, serving in every Liberal cabinet between 1861 and 1908. Roles included stints as Lord John Russell’s Secretary for War, Gladstone’s President of the Council and First Lord of the Admiralty, Rosebery’s Secretary for the Colonies, Campbell-Bannerman’s Lord Privy Seal, and Leader of the House of Lords under Asquith.
