A row over a leaflet

The Conservative Party agrees to withdraw a leaflet United for Liberty circulating in the Bristol South East by-election after a protest from former Liberal leader Lord Samuel. The leaflet contained pencil drawings of Samuel and Winston Churchill and an extract of a one of Samuel’s speeches in the Lords when presenting a Bill against the encroachments of civil liberties. Samuel denounced the leaflet as wholly misleading and that it was meant to imply that he and Churchill were at one in supporting the Tory candidate in the by-election. He went on to say he had already sent a message of support to the Liberal candidate, Miss Doreen Gorsky, and earnestly exhorted the electorate to vote for her. The by-election was won by Anthony Wedgwood Benn (as he was then known) for Labour.
