Following the fall of Disraeli’s government in the general election, W. E. Gladstone finalises the appointments to his first ministry. Major offices of state include George Robinson, 1st Marquess of Ripon as Lord President of the Council, Robert Lowe as Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Villiers, 4th Earl of Clarendon as Foreign Secretary, Henry Bruce (later 1st Baron Aberdare) as Home Secretary and John Bright as President of the Board of Trade.
