Liberalism: the ideas that built the Liberal Democrats
September 20, 2025 / 20:15
On This Day
18 November 1893
Death of Robert Grosvenor, 1st Baron Ebury, the oldest peer to vote against Home Rule
Grosvenor served as Whig MP for Shaftesbury 1822-26, Chester 1826-47 and Middlesex 1847-57. Grosvenor was an educational and social reformer, being particularly involved in the campaign to reform factory working hours. He held minor office under Grey, Melbourne and Russell but broke with Gladstone over Home Rule, and two months before his death aged 92 he voted against Gladstone’s Second Home Rule Bill in the House of Lords.
